On the Job Injury

Common Causes of Construction Site Accidents

By Chattanooga Personal Injury Attorney on January 6, 2012 - No comments

On the job injuries are likely to occur anywhere; however, one of the more dangerous jobs a person can have is being a construction worker, which can find a worker 50 stories above the ground or using very heavy, powerful, and potentially risky equipment.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that in 2009, there were 816 fatal work-related injuries for construction workers, higher than any other industry that year. The following are a list of common construction site accidents so employers and employees can better protect themselves against on the job construction injuries:

  1. Roof–related falls: Roof falls are one of the most common causes of death at construction sites, and roof-related falls (such as a skylight fall) pose great risks for workers. Both should be taken very seriously.
  2. Crane accidents and crane falls: Crane accident deaths can be caused by a variety of things, such as high winds or defective cranes, and crane falls (when a person falls from crane or it topples over) can cause devastating injuries.
  3. Falling objects: Workers are at risk when working in an area where overhead work is being performed.
  4. Holes in a construction site floor: Falls caused by a weak floor or unmarked holes may cause serious injury to an unsuspecting construction worker.
  5. Electrical accidents: The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that 350 construction workers die each year from electrical accidents, including electric shock, electrocution, and power line contact.
  6. Scaffolding accidents: About 65% of the construction industry works on scaffolds on a fairly regular basis, making safety on this equipment very important. Accidents can occur for a number of reasons, including defective or improperly-assembled scaffolding.
  7. Fires and explosions: OSHA determined more than 5,000 construction workers are injured and 200 killed each year due to workplace fires and explosions, making it one of the top safety concerns at a site.

It is important to remember that employers and construction companies have the responsibility to protect their workers from dangerous accidents. If employers are negligent and fail to take necessary safety precautions for their employees, they can be held liable for any injuries that may occur. Tennessee Workplace Accident Yields Safety Scrutiny

By Chattanooga Personal Injury Attorney on November 28, 2011 - No comments

Statistics show that accidents involving exploding dust have been connected to a minimum of six workplace fatalities in 2011. Five of those occurred in different incidents at Tennessee factories that produce powdered metal for car makers and other industrial applications.

These accidents are seen every year across the nation in factories that process fine metal, wood, or chemical powders. Safety authorities have researched and confirmed the hazards associated with these kinds of manufacturing plants for almost ten years, according to reporting by The San Francisco Gate. However, increased regulatory measures remain gridlocked by industry and government agendas, while workplace safety continues to be jeopardized. Safety risks rival those seen in grain factories (such as the one that blew up in Kansas last month and resulted in six fatalities); however, experts speculate that the 2.5 million facilities that produce metal, wood, and chemical dust may be less regulated, according to the SF Gate.

An examination conducted before the fatal explosions in Gallatin, Tennessee, shows that dust dangers were allegedly not monitored. Workers suffered severe injuries as a result of a blaze that examiners attribute to the collection of iron dust at the same facility for the company Hoeganaes. The plant is still currently in operation. Family members of those injured and killed in these devastating accidents are speaking out publicly against the negligence. If you or a loved one has been injured in a Tennessee workplace accident that you believe resulted from reckless operation standards on the part of the company, call the workplace injury attorneys in Tennessee with Massey & Associates, P.C. at (423) 697-4529 for a complimentary and confidential consultation today.
